We learned a lot by helping our parents in their later years, from taking them to the doctors to managing their trusts for them. Most of our elders turned over trustee duties to their successor trustee when they turned 90. That taught us about many ways things that can go wrong, from missing documents, poorly written ones, "flaky" trustees who didn't want the job, to "advisors" who gave bad advice.

At least we were lucky that all of them had enough assets to support themselves until the end.
