One thing you can do to improve the security of SMS message authentication is configure your phone to not display text messages on the lock screen. I realized this about a year ago that the six digit codes were visible on the phone without using the PIN or FaceID. It's a little inconvenient because I did like seeing messages from spouse and family come up on the lock screen but I now have phone configured to only display the contents of text messages after I type in the phone PIN. Those with young kids for example might not want to do that. There is almost always a security/convenience trade off.
