Yep, about once a year, on average, I have to do a complete reinstall (in which case the data on the old HDD is still easily recoverable). I've done it so often that I've got the process down to about 30-60 minutes.
For me, that's preferable to the more frequent and longer Windows update cycles.
If you don't enjoy fiddling with OS's, stay away from Linux. If you don't mind, it's a joy 95% of the time.
