If the investor attends to the balance in his holding in dollars, which means attending to his return, then he will not be looking at the price of his shares and worrying about price. The balance in the holding is the number of shares times the price of a share. It can happen that there is a period of a day or two to execute the reinvestment of distributions. If the distributions are not on reinvest, then the investor has withdrawn a bunch of money from the holding and of course the value goes down.
