Personal Consumer Issues • Sales Tax on Amazon Purchases

In CA, some cities have a sales tax adder of 0.25% to 2%. My home address has just the state rate or 7.75%. I often ship to an Amazon pick up locker (I have a small locked mailbox a mile from my house with 20 to 25 other neighbor mailboxes) rather than my home address as all but small plastic envelope type items end up being delivered with a pick up slip too go to the post office 10 miles away to get the package. Depending on what storage locker location I choose, I pay up to a 1% extra local sales tax for delivery to that zip code.

So, yes, the Amazon sales tax charged is based on the delivery address sales tax.

I rue the day most of Amazon packages started shipping USPS instead of UPS. Note, I can still get free same day / next day shipping to my house by Amazon delivery drivers depending on the item. This finds me ordering extra coffer or other small reoccurring items with free same day/next day to get to the $25 minimum for these orders to be delivered directly to the house.
