This. When I first started thinking about moving into bonds, TIPS caught my attention. I REALLY liked the concept, but putting money into a product that had a negative real return was ... not enticing.The fact that this forum mostly told people to stay the course and keep buying 0% yielding bonds of Intermediate duration was just the triumph of dogmatism over financial common sense.
Did some research into real yields on 10 year Treasuries, and it looks like the average real return over 50-70 years is about 2%. Things look a bit more promising now for going with longer durations. 2%+ on TIPS looks pretty tasty.
