For everyone who bailed near the bottom there was someone who bought near the bottom. Many plainly can handle it. There are two sides to every trade.It would seem that despite statements to the contrary, many just can't handle volatility when it shows up. Thinking back to the GFC, perhaps that is true -- I recall a few people I knew who bailed on equity near the bottom.
In addition, many sold because they needed the money - unemployment doubled during the GFC. That was an economic decision, not a psychological failing.
