If you can find the leak, great. If you can't find the leak, the first step is to top off with refrigerant with dye, and then see if you can find the leak... If you still can't find the leak, you declare there's a slow leak. At least that's what the mechanic did on my truck in california circa 2013.as others have noted, ac is a closed system. If it needs refrigerant, the system has a leak. I believe In CA, it is illegal to top off a system without repairing the leak first. (air quality regs)
