Point taken and this is great perspective. Short answer, no. I don't love the industry they are in. With that said, I don't love mine either. My ideal future workplace is digital, where products can be scaled, and work can be 100% remote. Their industry does not fit that criterion. Is your family business really the work you want to do?I've already done my soul searching there... RE is not aligned to who I am. I'd like to work, just not for Corp America. All the more reason to encourage them to sell, in my opinion. It very much feels like I’m getting pulled in one way or another at some point, unless it gets sold before such an event.
If you’re FI, then just RE. My opinion on this is generally unpopular here, but if you don’t need to work for money anymore, then… don’t. Don’t take on a new 10-year project out of some sense of familial responsibility— you don’t have any such responsibility.
I work full-time for a non-profit, for free. It’s the most important and rewarding work I’ve ever done in my life. I consider myself extremely fortunate to be able to do this work in my 40s without pay.
I’m not saying you should do non-profit stuff, just suggesting that you do the work you most genuinely want to so, regardless of financial gain.
