I found the later novels to be much more obscure and difficult. (I mean Dune Messiah, and God-Emperor of Dune; I don't know of anyone who recommends the later co-written novels).I watched the two new movies having never read the book. After watching the movies I read Dune. In hindsight I don’t feel like I missed out by going into the movies fresh. The lore and what-not isn’t explained as much in depth, but I thought the script captured the major plot points wellI rewatched it last night. It’s still good. But it assumes you read the book as it doesn’t explain a lot of stuff.
He's really telling the life of the founder of Islam from a non-religious viewpoint. Of course the Butlerian Jihad seems much more prescient in light of the predictions now re Artificial Intelligence.
I remember really liking Dragon in the Deep/ Under Pressure (his first novel), and Whipping Star. Dosadi is WS's sequel which sets up a really amazing situation but then the ending was a bit flat for me.
